Chungnam National University (CNU) was founded in 1952 under the educational motto of " Creativity, Development, and Service to the Community." Over the last decades, CNU has earned the reputation as the most prestigious national university in the mid-west region of Korea. University's prominent faculties with top-class research and educational capabilities, outstanding students, dedicated 170,000 alumni, and continuous community support have been indispensable as the driving forces behind our development.
Geographically located in the central region of the Korean peninsula and near Sejong City (new administrative city), CNU enjoys the best possible environment for its academic excellence in research and education. It's partly due to the presence of high caliber organizations such as Daedeok R & D special district, International Science Business Belt, Daejeon Government Complex, and Headquarters of the Republic of Korea Army, Air Foce, and Navy. University has been in the course of development alongside with these vital organizations.

In celebration of CNU's 60th anniversary in 2012, CNU is preparing for a transformation with a giant leap forward. With 3S (Smart, Stable, Sustainable) as key management policy, CNU will exert its best efforts in educational quality enhancement and capacity building. Through the collaborative effort among all members of the university, we believe we can fulfill our vision to be No. 1 national university and a leader in global competitiveness.

CNU mission & vision
Chungnam National University’s mission is to provide students with academic theories and application methods which are integral for the development of the nation and human society as a whole, and which nurture creativity, service, mind, spirit, and leadership skills.

 

History

Since 1952, Chungnam National University has been striving to become one of the top universities in the nation and world. Today, over 170,000 alumni have been taking an active role in serving and contributing to reach this endeavor.

1950~1959

• May 25, 1952
  Chungnam Provincial University is established with three colleges: Liberal Arts Sciences, Agriculture, and Engineering.
• May 25, 1953
  Chungnam National University celebrates its first anniversary.
• April 4, 1957
  The Graduate School is established.

1960~1969

• March 1, 1962
  Chungchong National University is established, unifying Chungnam Provincial University with Chungbuk Provincial University.
• March 1, 1963
  Chungnam National University is reorganized as a separate institution from Chungbuk University.
• March 13, 1964
  College of Law & Business Administration is established on November 30, 1967
  College of Medicine is established.

1970~1979

• July 1, 1970
  Administration Building, Graduate School, College of Economics & Management, and College of Law is moved to the Daedeok campus.
• July 1, 1972
  College of Agriculture is moved to the Daedeok campus.
  College of Engineering Education reorganized into Division of Engineering Education and General Engineering Division.
• March 10, 1975
  College of Agriculture is moved to the Daedeok campus.
• March 1, 1977
  Graduate School of Education is moved to the Daedeok campus.
• August 10, 1978
  University Hospital is built and opened.
• August 10, 1979
  College of Sciences is divided into the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Home Economics.
• December 1, 1979
  College of Fine Arts and Music is established.

1980~1989

• July 29, 1981
  Administration Building, Graduate School, College of Economics & Management, and College of Law are moved to the Daedeok Campus.
• March 1, 1982
  College of Agriculture is moved to the Daedeok campus.
  College of Engineering Education is reorganized into the Division of Engineering.
  Education and the General Engineering Division.
• December 30, 1982
  College of Agriculture is moved to the Daedeok campus.
• February 10, 1984
  Graduate School of Education is moved to the Daedeok campus.
• October 14, 1984
  University Hospital is built and opened.
• December 31, 1985
  College of Medicine is moved to the Bowun campus.
• March 1, 1987
  College of Sciences is divided into the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Home Economics.
• March 1, 1988
  College of Fine Arts and Music is established.
• March 1, 1989
  Graduate School of Public Health is established.

1990~1999

• March 1, 1990
  College of Sciences and Graduate School of Industry is established.
• March 1, 1991
  College of Veterinary Medicine is established.
• August 20, 1994
  Chungnam National University is selected as a State Policy University.
• February 28, 1995
  CNU is evaluated as a Superior University in the University Accreditation Assessment.
• October 12, 1996
  CNU is selected as a Superior University in the Educational Revolution Assessment.
• November 10, 1997
  CNU is selected as an Exclusive College in Basic Sciences.
• February 12, 1998
  CNU is selected as a Superior University for the Cyber University Project.
• March 15, 1999
  The Lifelong Education Center is opened.
• August 31, 1999
  CNU is selected as a Host School for Brain Korea 21.

2000~2009

• March 1, 2000
  Patent Law School is established.
• September 1, 2001
  College of Agriculture is reorganized as the College of Agriculture and Life Science.
• March 1, 2002
  Graduate School of Peace & Security is established.
• October 15, 2003
  CNU is selected as a Superior University in National Universities’ Development Project.
• March 1, 2004
  School of Bioscience Biotechnology is established.
  College of Liberal Arts is reorganized as the College of Humanities.
• March 30, 2005
  National Cancer Center at Chungnam National University is established.
• June 31, 2005
  CNU is funded by the NURI project 2005.
• September 28, 2005
  CNU is chosen as a leading university in structural reform.
• April 1, 2006
  The Center for Teaching & Learning is established.
• April 3, 2006
  The Office of International Affairs is relocated and opened.
• April 26, 2006
  Chosen for fifteen projects including BK21 in 2006.
• May 18, 2006
  Chosen as NURI in 2006.
• August 22, 2006
  Youngdong Academic Forest of College of Agriculture and Life Sciences opened.
• December 7, 2006
  The National Defense Institute is established.
  The Software Research Center is changed into the Software Institute.
• January 1, 2007
  CNU Faculty Council is established.
• May 2, 2007
  CNU is selected as an excellent library for the Contribution to the Joint Application of Academic Information.
• May 21, 2007
  CNU is selected as an E-learning Support Center (Daejeon & Chungnam area).
• July 19, 2007
  Ji-Hwan Kim is appointed Acting President.
• January 21, 2008
  Inauguration of the 16th President, Yong-Ho Song.
• February 4, 2008
  CNU is designated as one of the universities authorized to establish the Law School.

Introduction

Geographically situated in the central region of the Korean peninsula, CNU enjoys the best possible environment for excellence in research and education thanks to the presence of high caliber organizations such as the Daedeok R&D Special District, the Multifunctional Administrative City, the Daejeon Government Complex, and the Headquarters of the Korean Armed Forces. This environment made it possible for CNU to develop into one of the nation’s strategic universities by government and evolve into the center of cooperation with research institutes and industry.
